If I was to walk down the street, how would I know that you are a Christian or disciple of Jesus? Jesus on this Sixth Sunday of Easter answers that question. He tells us today “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn 13:34-35) Easier said then done. Is there another way? Jesus shows us that it is so much more easier than we think. Despite our sinful ways, our falling into temptations, turning away from God, Jesus still loves us. Why? Jesus tells us that it is easier to change a mans soul with kindness and love than to retaliate with anger or hated. Remember Jesus on the cross, after suffering through his passion and nailing on the cross. People were still insulting him and speaking ill of him. But instead of showing hatred he says “Father forgive them for they do not know what they do.”  

I’m sure many of us, myself included, would use a few choice words to these people. I’m sure Christ would like to do the same, but he shows the world how we can break the cycle of hatred and conquer with love. He did during his ministry, on the cross, and even during this Easter season. Let us conquer the darkness in the world by showing the world we are not just any human being, but as disciples of Christ we are loving always to all of God’s creatures.

Si caminara por la calle, ¿cómo sabría que eres cristiano o discípulo de Jesús? Jesús en este Sexto Domingo de Pascua responde a esa pregunta. Él nos dice hoy: “Les doy un mandamiento nuevo: que se amén unos a otros, como yo os he amado, así también vosotros deben amarse unos a otros. Así sabrán todos que son mis discípulos, si se aman unos a otros”. (Jn 13:34-35) Es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. ¿Hay otra manera? Jesús nos muestra que es mucho más fácil de lo que pensamos. A pesar de nuestros caminos pecaminosos, de nuestra caída en tentaciones y de nuestro alejamiento de Dios, Jesús todavía nos ama. ¿Por qué? Jesús nos dice que es más fácil cambiar el alma de un hombre con bondad y amor que tomar represalias con ira u odio. Recuerden a Jesús en la cruz, después de sufrir su pasión y ser clavado en la cruz. La gente lo insultaba y hablaba mal de él. Pero él en lugar de mostrar odio dice: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”.   

Estoy seguro de que muchos de nosotros, incluido yo, usaríamos algunas palabras selectas para estas personas. Estoy seguro de que a Cristo le gustaría hacer lo mismo, pero él muestra al mundo cómo podemos romper el ciclo del odio y conquistarlo con amor. Lo hizo durante su ministerio, en la cruz e incluso durante este tiempo de Pascua. Conquistemos la oscuridad del mundo mostrando al mundo que no somos cualquier ser humano, sino que como discípulos de Cristo amamos siempre a todas las criaturas de Dios.
